SIMULATION MODEL SOLUTION and SUMMARY Section Description – Part 4/5

This article follows the three articles on the RUNSPEC, GRID & EDIT and PROPS & REGIONS sections of the Volve oil field simulation model.

SOLUTION

The simulator calculates the initial equilibrium state of the reservoir and defines the the pressure and saturations in each grid cell. For a reservoir with multi-phase fluid, the vertical pressure and saturation gradient can be determined from the contact depths, together with the capillary pressure at these depths.

--RESTART
-- 'HIS-BC' 306 / Nov-15

The keyword defines the parameters to restart the simulation from a previous run that has written a RESTART file out to disk. This is commented out in the data file.

This keyword defines the parameters used to initialize the model in each region for conventional hydrostatic equilibrium.

The parameters are Datum depth, Pressure at datum, Depth of OWC, Oil-water capillary pressure at OWC, Depth of GOC, Gas-oil capillary pressure at GWC, activation of dissolved gas presence keyword, activation of condensate presence keyword and accuracy setting.

Initial pressure distribution of the Volve Oil field. Note the smooth gradient.

The keyword defines the threshold pressure between various equilibration regions for fluid to flow between them. The first parameter is the ‘from’ equilibration region, the second parameter is the ‘to’ equilibration region. The threshold pressure here is set to a value calculation during the initial conditions at hydrostatic equillibrium.

This keyword describes the tables of dissolved gas-oil ratio versus depth, one for each equilibration region. This is also referred to in the EQUIL keyword.

RPTSOL
 FIP=3 RESTART=4 FIPRESV /

This keyword controls the output of SOLUTION section data to the Print file. The first term instructs that initial fluids in place are reported for all sets of fluid in place regions defined with the FIP keyword. The second term instructs the current fluids in place and phase potentials in each grid cell are written to the Restart files. The third term instructs that the output of region reservoir volumes are reported.

TBLKFIW1
 680400*0.0 /
TBLKFIW2
 680400*0.0 /

The keyword defines the initial tracer concentration for all or selected cells in the model. This keyword concatenates TBLK + Tracer State ( F or S) + Name of tracer.

SUMMARY

The SUMMARY section defines the variables to be written to the summary files that are used to generate line graphs of properties such as oil flow rate versus time, grid block pressure versus time, etc.

The summary files are reported in the following formats:

  • .RSM : Output RSM file, ASCII format
  • .SMPEC : The SUMMARY index file for both unified and non-unified formats
  • .S001, .S002, .S003, … : The SUMMARY data files containing the variables requested to be written to the SUMMARY file.

TCPU

Returns the current CPU usage in seconds.

MSUMLINS

Total number of linear iterations since the start of the run

This code is an example for using the mnemonics of the SUMMARY section. Here, group oil production rate and group total oil production is written in the SUMMARY file.

The Field name of the wells and Groups for the wells is defined using the WELSPECS in the SCHEDULE section. The parameters defined below are can be accessed on ResInsight.
