The license conditions of the Volve Oilfield dataset: What’s in there for you?

The license governing the Volve oil field dataset strongly influences its the outreach and potential applications. The dataset was initially released under the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license that prevented commercial use of the dataset and mandated all derivative material to be open-source, non commercial. Essentially, the dataset was supposed to be used exclusively by the open academia, and not for commercial entities. This license agreement was criticized by the community.  ...  (Read more)

SIMULATION MODEL SOLUTION and SUMMARY Section Description – Part 4/5

The simulator calculates the initial equilibrium state of the reservoir and defines the the pressure and saturations in each grid cell. For a reservoir with multi-phase fluid, the vertical pressure and saturation gradient can be determined from the contact depths, together with the capillary pressure at these depths.

Navigating Well log formats in the Volve Oilfield data with the Welly library

Petrophysical data of the Volve data is available in the Well_logs folder of the dataset. The data is available as raw and processed well log data files along with interpretation reports. We will be using the Welly Python Library to import and process the Well logs. A newer well log format - the JSON well log - will used to instead of the other formats

Setup VirtualBox, OPM-Flow Simulator and ResInsight to run the Volve Oilfield Model

OPM-Flow is an open source fully implicit, black oil reservoir simulator developed under the Open Porous Media Initiative. The simulator is based on a Linux workspace and requires the installation of a virtual-box in windows based machines. We’ll be using this simulator for our simulation and visualization of the Volve oilfield model.

Core Description – Mineralogy and Petrology

Statoils Geological Laboratory performed whole rock X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Petrographic point count, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis on cored intervals of the 15/9-19 SR Well. The analysis characterizes the mineralogy and petrography of these sandstone units and evaluates their controls on reservoir quality.  ...  (Read more)
